Classic never goes out of style.
What is SoHo Pilates?
SoHo Pilates offers Classical Pilates in a Contemporary setting. At SoHo Pilates we prioritize form and individualized workouts over one-size-fits-all classes, which is why we offer a variety of class types ranging from “Advanced Classical Reformer” to “Pre/Post Natal Mat Classes.” All of our instructors are fully certified in Pilates. Here at SoHo Pilates, we hope to continue the work Joseph Pilates started in a fun, challenging, and inclusive space. Come visit our studio located on the corner of Houston and Crosby for small group or private Pilates sessions using classical equipment hand crafted locally in NY by Pilates Designs, LLC to see the benefits of Pilates for yourself.

Joseph Pilates “Take 30 lessons - 3x a week for 10 weeks - and you will see you have a new body.” He recommended Pilates 3x a week and we agree. Can’t commit to 3x a week every week? No stress. Come as often as you are able. Pilates even just once a week, supplemented with other types of exercise, is a great way to improve your overall strength and mobility.

Joseph Pilates, best recognized in photos as the man confidently teaching in merely a Speedo, believed that “physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness,” a philosophy he lived by wholeheartedly. As a child and young adult, Pilates suffered from a range of ailments, including asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. Despite these challenges, he became a dedicated gymnast, boxer, and athlete. It was during his time in an internment camp during World War I that Pilates began developing the ideas that would later form his revolutionary exercise system, now known as Mat Work. In 1926, Pilates immigrated to the United States from Germany. At age 42, he met his future wife, Clara, aboard the ship to New York City, and together they opened the first Pilates studio. Pilates’ method quickly gained popularity among dancers, with choreographers such as George Balanchine and Martha Graham sending their performers to be “fixed” through his unique approach to balance, strength, and rehabilitation. After a lifetime dedicated to movement and education, Joseph Pilates passed away in 1967 at the age of 87 with the dream of seeing a Pilates studio on every block of Manhattan. While he is no longer here to witness that vision, SoHo Pilates proudly carries on his legacy - sharing a love of movement and the Pilates method with New Yorkers every day.

Absolutely! We highly recommend beginning Pilates before your pregnancy. We also request you only participate in Private Sessions and Pre/Post Natal Group Classes. At SoHo Pilates we have a forgiving 12 hour late cancel policy. If you cancel a class less than 12 hours before the start time, you will not be reimbursed for your class.
